Furnaces
Over the years, CMI has been involved in numerous special furnace
applications related to the foundry industry.
The furnace shown to the right is a very unique furnace used to
cast extremely high integrity structural castings for the automotive
industry. It is used in casting aluminum with the low pressure process.
One of its unique features is the large top opening which permits
the placement of the stalk tubes (filling tubes) virtually anywhere
the tooling engineer wants them. This allows for the casting of
very large parts or many parts on the same pattern.
With the use of electric resistant immersion heaters, the heating
efficiency of the metal can reach 95% or higher. And with the heating
occurring below the metal surface, there are less oxides, dross,
and metal reaction with the refractory occurring. This translates
into less cleaning, longer uptime, and reduced scrap.
The design of the furnace makes it easier to service the immersion
heaters if necessary without draining the furnace. The heating element
can be pulled from the protection tube, or you can easily remove
the tube with the heating elements inside.
